TRAUMA AND HYPNOTHERAPY
PLEASE NOTE - I AM NOT CURRENTLY SEEING ANY CLIENTS AT THE PRESENT TIME. UPDATES WILL FOLLOW IN THE FUTURE.
Trauma can be defined as any experience which results in an extreme physical or emotional assault, and as a consequence leaves an individual in a state of helplessness.
This state of helplessness can often manifest as:
- involuntary re-experiencing of the trauma (flashbacks)
- persistent avoidance
- psychic numbing (emotional anaesthesia)
- insomnia
- anxiety
- anger
Trauma is believed to effect a primitive and instinctual part of our brain (the amygdala). In doing so, whilst a person might intellectually know that they should no longer be affected by the trauma, the instinctual part of our brain continues to respond to certain stimilus as if it were still a threat. This can create confusion and conflict within a person, and possibly lead to anxiety, or outbursts of frustration and anger.
One of the difficulties experienced by those who suffer from trauma is that whilst the traumatic event might have happened some time ago, it is still experienced constantly in the present as if it were real.
How can Hypnotherapy help with Trauma?
Hypnosis, through its ability to access the sub-conscious mind, offers you tools to create order amongst the chaos, and anchor new associations to the experiences associated with the trauma.
All this is done in a safe and supportive environment at the clients own pace. Through this process I can help you to successfully transform feelings of helplessness, into feelings of strength and empowerment.
